Gay-Themed Tours
Walk About New York offers the following three, gay-themed tours.
The Gay Village Walking Tour will take you to the homes, places of business, bars, and art installations where gay men and lesbians have lived, loved, partied and worked over the past 130 years in Greenwich Village, New York’s most storied neighborhood. Many of those stories were written by the men and women of the gay community. From a closeted multimillionaire to a First Lady’s circle of friends to well-known and lesser-known artists, poets, photographers and musicians to New York City elected officials and political activists, the Gay Village Walking Tour includes a cast of characters that is sure to amuse, surprise and inform you, whether you are gay or straight or none of the above!
The Gay Village Bar Crawl mixes gay history and Greenwich Village history with spirits of all sort. Since at least the end of the 19th century bar culture has loomed large in the gay community. During this three-hour bar crawl, learn why bars have played such an outsized role in gay life. Join us as we tip back our glasses at four historic gay bars and lesbian bars, on a lively and entertaining tour of New York City’s most storied neighborhood, Greenwich Village. Have a few drinks and some fun with friends while learning about the history of the important place that bars have played in the LGBTQ community.
The Gay Graves Tour is an LGBT-focused tour of Green-Wood Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark
in Brooklyn. This Tour is one-of-a-kind. It will introduce you to the famous and the not-so-famous gay
men (Leonard Bernstein and Fred Ebb) and lesbians (Emma Stebbins and Violet Oakley), their friends,
their supporters and their detractors who are among the permanent residents at Green-Wood. Time
passes quickly because at every moment we are surrounded by beauty, both the man-made monuments
and nature’s artistry. The Gay Graves Tour is conducted entirely on foot. The terrain of Green-Wood is hilly;
this is more of hike than a walk.

Downtown Manhattan is where New York, or more precisely where Nieuw Amsterdam began. This area of Manhattan, more than any other in New York, offers a stark contrast between the past and the present. On our Downtown Manhattan Walking Tour you’ll visit sites that date to Colonial New York; see skyscrapers built to house America’s financial powerhouses, and stand where American history was made. Discover where Alexander Hamilton is buried; where George Washington first took the oath of office in 1789; where Fort Amsterdam once stood; and why The Battery is so called.
